Facing downstream, I stood on Lambeth Bridge, and the Palace of Westminster was on the left. I started the picture at nine and, right on the dot of nine, the clock face lit up. The daylight faded rapidly and, all of a sudden, the whole scene changed from orange to blue. I had to return on several evenings to rework the painting by adding several layers of paint scraped over the entire surface. This, however, added texture and detail to areas such as the cloudless rainbow-haze of the sky, and the blank area of river in the foreground.
