Many functional brick bridges from the Victorian era span an abandoned railway line that runs from Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palace and Mill Hill in north London.
The one in this painting is situated in a forlorn and overgrown cutting next to Highgate Wood, fenced off from public access. When I painted this scene I felt a little uneasy standing by the dark bridge in the gloom and I was glad to get back out into the open!
Still, it’s places such as this one that fascinate me, with its ghostly remnants from an earlier age.
