The Shard can be seen from many different places and unfamiliar viewpoints. This painting was made in situ near Southwark tube station over a period of 4-5 nights. I was attracted to the juxtaposition of the Shard with the residential block of flats on the left. Like several of my night time scenes I added a fluorescent orange paint (mixed down slightly to remove some of its the garishness) to help recreate the austere orange light of the street lamps.
There were several passers by whilst I painted but I decided not to add them in because I wanted to evoke a late night atmosphere in the picture.
